Rowing Clinic For Disabled Youth

Ashland Rowing Club’s (ARC) summer “disabled youth” rowing program is open to disabled youth throughout the area from 8th through 11th grade (generally ages 12 through 18).  This summer program offers an introduction to rowing - both sweep and sculling. The camp will focus on having fun, learning to row, developing physical fitness, working with others, and learning leadership roles.

Dates and Times will appear here when this is scheduled.

The sessions are geared towards the participants’ level of experience.

Participation:  The Disabled Youth Camp is an ARC program designed for students ages 12 – 18 with disabilities.  We need all participants to make a commitment to coming all 4 days of the clinic. The reason for this is that it takes 8 students to row a boat…...if one kid doesn’t show up then no one gets to row… boo hoo!!!  We will be using our clubs' volunteers to support your child in this program on a daily basis.  Cost for the program is $20 per student to provide healthy snacks and offset the cost of the safety launch.

Coaches: Program coaches are either US Rowing certified coaches or have equivalent experience coaching or rowing. Many of the ARC coaches also have educational backgrounds in Special Education; have worked  with the developmentally disabled; have some clinical counseling experience; and more specifically have worked with disabled youth from this age group.

Parents of Rowers
: Parent support is greatly appreciated and often critical to your rower's successful crew experience.  Parents are encouraged to provide carpool, communication and organizational support.  Please let us know what you can do by filling out all the forms found at the bottom of this page.

During the 2005 four day clinic, five special needs students erged, watched safety/rowing videos, did Brain Gym,  passed swimming tests as well as learning the basics of rowing on the water.  Each and every student participated in rowing in an 8+, a 4+, a quad (4x+) and Mr. Bubbles (a 2x).

Eating lunch together gave rise to comfortable socialization among the students who were from Ashland Middle School, Phoenix High School and from Sacramento, California.   Students broadened their experiences, developed self confidence, gained in fitness, and had a wonderful four days at the lake.

What to Bring?

Clothing:  Wear comfortable clothes you can work out in.  This includes shorts that are not baggy – because they stick on the tracks.  Shirts need to be fitted because big shirts can catch your hands or the oar handle.  Have layers of clothes available for the cold weather.  Wear athletic shoes and socks that can get muddy.

Food and Drink: Bring a filled water bottle and healthy sack lunch to practice everyday.

Sunscreen: Be sure you apply sunscreen at home and bring some along with you for your face and ears.

Physical:  ARC follows the Oregon State Athletic Association’s (OSAA) guideline for physicals.  School physicals are acceptable.  Athletes may submit a copy of the form required by the school, a sports physical form from their doctor, or use the ARC physical form found below.

Swim Test:  All rowers must pass a swim test or wear a life vest in the boat. Rowers must be able to comfortably swim 100 meters (4 laps of a 25 meter pool) and tread water for 5 minutes.  The YMCA in Ashland will let you do this test for free.  The Medford Y charges $2.  Lifeguards should complete and sign the swim test form.
