Rowing experience, level of
fitness, and commitment to racing are prerequisites as we focus on
preparing to race in masters' competitions through increasing physical
fitness and racing strategies. Members are expected to participate in
three rows and two erg pieces a week and are encouraged to participate
in at least one sprint and one head race each year. All year-round
members are eligible to try out for the racing team. Coach approval is
required. Spring regattas are frequently called "sprint" races. At 1000 meters in length, down a mostly straight river or lake, a typical course is usually six lanes wide with a start and a finish line. Power and mental control often determine the winner of these races. Boats line up at the start and race head-to-head down the course to the finish line. Racers are responsible for arranging their own transportation to and from regattas, as well as meals and lodging. A racing fee is charged by ARC for each regatta to cover entry fees, equipment transportation and coaching expenses. | Qualifying 1000 meter ergometer scores are as follows:
Fall regattas are called "head" races. These events are longer, endurance oriented competitions in which boats start in 20 to 30 second intervals and row single file unless one crew is overtaking another. The winner completes the course in the shortest time. It may take 20 to 25 minutes. The length of the race depends on the venue, but it is usually around 5000 meters. The Ashland Rowing Club has enjoyed some amazing race results in regional, national and internationals competitions. |
